   TOMCAT In the News,

April 2000

Around The World:  Hoist School UK

On the heals of a very successful Hoist and Rigging Workshop downunder to Sydney, Australia, TOMCAT UK is proud to host the third workshop of the year at our premises in Bromborough England.

Recognized worldwide as the most comprehensive training course of its kind, the workshop is a unique learning opportunity for both those new to the entertainment industry - as well as veterans of the business.

Through two days of hands-on workshops and lectures by industry professionals, workshop participants will receive instruction on truss design and use, safe rigging practices and principles, and chain hoist design, use and troubleshooting.

With over 25 years of experience conducting industrial and theatrical product maintenance and sales training in the United  States and abroad, Wally Blount, Manager of the entertainment Products Division of Columbus McKinnon Corporation, will discuss the proper use of CM Lodestar products on Thursday, May 4, 2000.

Wally will also lead participants in hands-on disassembly and re-assembly of a one ton CM Lodestar chain hoist to demonstrate troubleshooting techniques.  This workshop entails hands-on work with CM Lodestar hoists.

On Friday, May 5, 2000, recognized experts in the entertainment industry Nick Brown and Pete Smith of the UK's Unusual Rigging, Ltd. who have lead the way in promoting safety and safe rigging practices for many years will provide rigging instruction.  Their session regarding rigging practices and principles will cover the range of rigging hardware and basic rigging formulas and techniques.  Included will be tuition on practical rigging applications and methods.

TOMCAT UK's own Adrian Black will lead participants in truss design, use, safety and inspection on the last day of the workshop, Saturday, May 6.  Space is limited.  For more information on TOMCAT's UK Hoist and Rigging Workshop, please contact us at info(snabel A)tomcatuk.com

New Year's Eve at the Millennium Dome was the culmination of months of activity for TOMCAT and our sister company Brilliant Stages.   Much of the hardware that the Dome's estimated 10 million visitors will admire this year as they gaze upward at the Central Arena show, was developed and manufactured at TOMCAT's UK and US facilities.  Including the shows trussing and gantry system and a series of 60 foot dynamic mobiles.

Brilliant Stages were instrumental in realizing Mark Fisher's breathtaking design.  Turning out the 80ft automated stage and the 35 ft telescopic PA tower was as symbolically significant as it was technically sophisticated.  Mirroring the theme of the Central Show, TOMCAT and Brilliant Stages defined their own unique working relationship throughout the development of this project.   It truly is a global economy!

TODD Joins TOMCAT USA

TOMCAT announces an addition to the US sales team this past month. Will Todd joined our sales team in May and will be moving into our design department in September.

Todd, 23, attended the University of Arizona majoring in Theater Production. He served as Head Electrician for Feld Entertainment for 4 years. Todd traveled with Pocahontas and The Little Mermaid throughout the US, Canada, Mexico City and Puerto Rico.

"It will be a welcome change to actually be off the road, especially since I just got married," said Todd. He recently married Olga Jiltsova, a Russian ice skater, who also toured with Feld Entertainment.
